Samuel L. Jackson Joins 'RoboCop' Remake

The cast of Jose Padilha's remake of "RoboCop" continues to grow stronger and stronger. The latest man to join the cast is Samuel L. Jackson, who will be playing an updated version of Bixby Snyder in the upcoming film.

The Hollywood Reporter has the news, saying that Jackson plays a "charismatic TV mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world." It's definitely a spin on the character we knew in the previous incarnation of the film, but it seems like a smart decision for Padilha to separate himself from what came before.

Jackson joins an already impressive cast including Joel Kinnaman and Gary Oldman. Kinnaman will play an updated version of protagonist Alex Murphy, while Oldman plays the creator of RoboCop and a character that's unique to this film.

"'RoboCop' is going to be a lot more human," Kinnaman said. "The first movie is one of my favorite movies. I love it. Of course, [original director Paul] Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it’s not going to have that tone. It’s a re-imagination of it. There’s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece, for Alex Murphy and especially when he is RoboCop. It's much more challenging."

"RoboCop" is due in theaters on August 9, 2013.
